Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists Insurance

There are two types of auto insurance policies that are available to driviers in the case of an accident where the person that causes the accident is not fully covered by their current policy. These two types of policies are uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist coverage.

Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage pays for your bodily injuries that are caused by an accident if you’re struck by a hit-and-run driver or by someone driving without car insurance. Most carriers will usually require confirmation that a party is uninsured before this coverage will kick in.

Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage will pay out for the claim if the driver at fault causes more damage than his policy limits allow. In some states, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage will also pay for property damages caused in these types of situations.

A unisnsured driver policy is becoming more and more required in a growing number of states. underinsured driver coverage, however, is only required in four states, which are Connecticut, Minnesota, Maine and Vermont.
