Marriage: For Better or For Worse?
Getting married changes many aspects of a person’s life. Some changes are for the better, and some for the worse (hopefully, mostly for the better). Surprisingly enough, one of those changes can be with your auto insurance rates!
Marital status can change auto insurance rates for the better and for the worse. There are many studies that have been completed and show a positive trend with marriage and driving. These reports have shown that married couples tend to drive slower and more carefully than those who are single. This makes sense, right? If you have someone special at home, you want to take care of yourself for him or her.
Ok, so how is marriage so great for your insurance rates?
Pluses
Every company loves more business, so adding to your policy will definitely benefit you. There are two ways you can add your partner to your policy. Some companies allow you to add your significant other to your policy, and some allow you to add another car. Don’t let these two options fool you. They are very different.
Adding another person to your policy means that they are insured when driving any vehicle. If you add another car to your policy, then you are covered for anyone driving that vehicle. In other words, some policies follow the car while others follow the driver. Make sure you know which one your policy follows.
Minuses
One of the only times that getting married can hurt your insurance rates is if your spouse has a poor driving record. If this is the case, it is sometimes better to stay on separate policies. Talk to your insurance company and see if it is better for your individual situation to combine or remain separate.
Marriage Isn’t a Joke!
If you are planning on pretending to be married just to get cheaper insurance, (people do try this) then you might want to think again. Some states require couples with different last names to provide proof of matrimony. Also, the consequences for insurance fraud can be pretty steep.
