Fraud Protection
Auto insurance fraud is becoming more prevalent than many people realize. With a bad economy, there comes a strong need for more money. The need for money has the ability to make people do things they might not other wise consider.
One of the best ways to avoid being a victim of any crime is to be educated. Know what to look for and how to handle what you find. Because insurance fraud is becoming increasingly popular we want to provide you with a few tips to keep you from becoming a victim.
Auto insurance fraud can take on many forms:
false claims, staged accidents, and false estimates
. So, it is important to know how to handle each one individually and signs to look for.
False Claims:
False claims involve incidents where people try to file a claim with their insurance company for an accident that never happened. A person can tell their insurance company that the police were never called, they can make up a body shop estimate, and try to convince the company that an accident really occurred, when it didn’t.
Staged Accidents:
It may sound crazy to some, but yes people do stage accidents. It is not uncommon for people to make a plan on how to be involved in an accident in order to get money from an insurance company. These staged accidents can sometimes involve several cars and innocent people become victims.
If you feel like you are involved in a staged accident, be sure to write down the license plate number of the car(s) involved, immediately. This way, if the driver decides to take off you have some type of identification. Call the police in any accident. Never trust someone who says they just want to deal with it themselves and not call an insurance company. They usually have something to hide.
Faulty Estimates:
It can be beneficial for people to know the owners of body shops. Technically a body shop can make up an estimate for a car that is not reliable. The body shop can say that items on a car need to be fixed that really doesn’t. This is why it is important to go through your insurance company in an accident so that they can use an estimator. An estimator that your insurance company trusts will come out and estimate the total cost of damages-accurately.
Although some of these steps can seem slightly over-kill, it is worth taking the time. If you are involved in insurance fraud it can be extremely expensive to fix. It’s always a good idea to do more than necessary, rather than having to regret not doing enough later.
