OMG People Are Texting and Driving!
A new year means a chance for a new beginning. I’m sure by now you have seen the nationwide campaign against texting and driving. Commercials, posters, and ads have all been created to spread the word about the dangers of texting and driving. Because of the campaign, and it being a time for new beginnings, many states have decided that in 2010 they will outlaw the use of texting while driving.
These new laws have affected over 40 states, and the trend continues to grow. Statistics have shown that accidents pertaining to cell phone use has increased drastically in the last few years, especially with the increase in smart phones. A majority of people use smart phones to constantly check their e-mail, get the weather, and find directions, causing yet another distraction on the road.
So, should cell phone companies be blamed for this increase in accidents? After all, they are the ones creating these distracting devises, right? Yes, they are creating them, but they are not advising that the phones be used while in the car. Cell phone companies have made a point to express how unsafe driving and using a cell phone is and how they do not advise it. It is the user’s responsibility to operate their phone only when in a safe environment.
The bottom line is, if you have something so important to talk to someone about, or an e-mail that is in need of immediate response, pull over and take care of it. You will not save any time by texting or responding to a e-mail while you are driving. By taking your focus off the road you usually end up driving slower, and not avoiding traffic. So please, just pull over and stop putting other people’s lives at risk. Your e-mail or text should not be more important than risking someone else’s life.
